Last week, Darren Collier, a forty-year-old chiropractor in St. Louis, realized that there was a lot of stuff in the press and on television about people being busy. “Arianna Huffington was on some talk show, telling people to do less, be less busy. Then there was an article from the Times, titled ‘I REFUSE TO BE BUSY,’ being posted all over Facebook.” Collier was confused. “Obviously, I say ‘I’m so busy’ all the time, and obviously I hear it all the time, but, I mean, I just thought it was what people said to get away from each other as fast as possible.”
“Yeah, that’s what I always thought, too,” Julie Anderson, thirty-three, said as she gassed up her Lexus S.U.V. in a Denver suburb. Her daughter, Angela, sat in a car seat chewing on a Golden Book about cows. “A couple years ago, there was this Op-Ed in the Times, this guy who was all whiny, like, ‘Why is everyone always saying they’re busy?’ and I was like, ‘I’m sorry, but are you a dipshit? You know all these people just don’t like you, right?’ ”
A shiny Prius pulled up at an adjoining pump. The driver was about Anderson’s age, and she also had a child in the back. “Hey, Julie, how are you?” she said, warmly.
“Oh, you know!” Anderson said. “Very busy!” Then she whispered, “I’m not doing anything today. I am going to go home and look out the window and drool. But I can’t frickin’ stand that bitch!”
After Anderson left, the woman in the Prius identified herself as Jennifer Forbes, thirty-two. “For some reason, I see Julie everywhere,” she said. “The second I ask her how she is, I’m literally praying to God, ‘Please let her say she’s busy, please let her says she’s busy,’ and when she does I’m like, ‘Yes!’ ”
Back in St. Louis, Collier was on the phone with his wife. “Just tell them you’re busy,” he said. Then he snorted.
Mira Solis, twenty-seven, a part-time receptionist in Collier’s office, overheard the conversation and had this to add: “There’s only one thing I really like to do, and that is posting inspirational quotes about work, ambition, and success on Pinterest, although I don’t work much and am not particularly ambitious or successful. I always tell my friends, ‘I’m really busy,’ and they always say, ‘Wow, great, so am I!’ ” Solis laughed and shrugged. “But we all know that none of us actually does jack shit.”
