I'm gonna get PA speakers. What do you recommend? I've been thinking JBL eon 315's.

i really *really* like those! i would totally reccomend them. you can use any old mixer with them. i almost bought some but then got something cheaper. i'm still considering buying them if i buy pa speakers again.

that is some cool stuff ian. i've been thinking of buying a sovtek for a while, there was a mig60 recently at atomic but i passed on it. i really like my v4 4x12 and v4s for that matter, i have 3 of them... avatar cabinets seem pretty good but also a little on the cheapo side, (the jack/plate on the back seems to bust pretty easily - i've seen this on 3 of them) and for the same price you can probably find a decent marshall 1960 on craigslist - the last one i got was $350.

pat, what are your thoughts on fender cabs? specifically the DT 4x12.

The MIG60 is TIGHT. I can't vouch for other Sovteks.
I hate Avatar cabs. They sound and feel cheap. Gimme some standard Marshall 1960 straight cabs any day.
Guitar head want list in alphabetical order (which are all on craigslist and ebay but I can't buy cause I put all my money into a new studio space!):
Ampeg - VL502/VL1002 Crate - GT50/100 Stealth Crate - Vintage Club VC60H/120H Mesa Boogie - DC-3/DC-5 Metaltronix - M1000 Yamaha - T-50/100

Are the VTM's the best cheap tube amps? I've heard good things about them. Would you say they are better/worse than the sovteks?
What about a Music Man?
I like a pretty heavy distortion sound, but something not too metaly, if that makes sense.
What would you recommend as a good practice amp? I've been playing on this solid state for a while, but it's been cutting out (the distortion just kinda dies after about a half hour of playing) I don't know if it's reparable, or whether it would be best to just get another amp. Ideally, I'd like something better than this crappy line 6 I've been using.

Hmm, I always heard that avatars were pretty solid for the price. Does anyone know about EMPEROR cabs? Way out of mine (and probably most people on here)s price range, but they look cool as shit.

The new eon's weight 35 pounds each. Very light. I was gonna get some subs in the future just to have a more complete sound. I have a basic xenyx 1202 fx and it's really easy to use plus has alot of effect on each channel (not that really matters). I was thinking about behinger new eurolives but everyone I've talked to say they blow easily with vocals after the first time you use them. Lol.

ian: Emperors have shitty jacks and jack plates, too. They look great, sound great, but if you're in a band that plays shows, and not just using your Emperor cabs for nice-ass furniture, be careful with those jack plates!!!
ryan: look into Peavey Windsor heads. They're CRAZY for the price. You can find them used for $200-300. They're $400 new WITH CABINET!!! Awesome "modded" JCM800 sound, even going into Mesa Boogie (but not Dual Rec) territory, but not without audible, but negligible noise floor. I got one for $25 in a silly trade.

i would say peavey vtm 120s are up there for cheap awesome amps. prices keep going up and although i just paid 250 for a fucking mint one, i know the going rate on ebay is/was more like 450 recently. the sovtek mig 60 has el34 tubes so it sounds a little different than the 6l6 based 50 or 100, but i really like most of them that i've heard. i keep thinking i want a couple mig 50s because they are so tiny.
fender cabs: i have one, it is a GE-412 and i got it for $50 so of course i love it. it is light as shit (i can carry it with one hand) and 300w so yeah... i have not really compared it to my other cabs, but like the behringer 4x12 i have under it currently, it is pretty loud and sounds good enough. it probably does sound better than the behringer, but the behringer has louder speakers.
i was stoked the other day when i saw a pic of black flag and ginn was using a peavey PA-400, which i really liked for guitar when i got one for real cheap recently. 70s solid state peavey amps are pretty popular with punk bands these days and for good reason.
while still on peavey another amp to check out is the butcher (yeah best name for an amp!!!) which is a straight up jcm800 clone (no i havent compared them its hearsay) but they sound pretty wicked (dude from wasted time has one)
i'll post more later.

Pat have you ever heard of a "New Jersey Marshall" cabinet? My uncle passed on to me what seems to be 70's slant, Marshall (or Marshall-like) 4x12 that he keeps calling a "New Jersey Marshall". You know any back story on that? looks like dis: Also inherited was this ROAD head, you know anything about ROAD amplifiers? Seems like no information is available on that internet about those either.

i dont know much about the Road brand... it looks kind of similar to the 70s Kustom or Acoustic solid-state heads?

also does anyone know any good basses that can handle low tunings well? other than the thunderbird.

i think the heavier duty basses out there will be just fine. my current bass is an SX from rondomusic and it seems to do fine with lower tunings but i don't play it very much. here;s a lint to the one i got: www.rondomusic.com/sjb-75ltd3ts.html i really need to upgrade from the plastic back-ed tuners that it came with but it plays really great and seems really well made.

I've fallen out of love with the Grabber- Not enough gain! If there better pickups, it'd be sooooo awesome.
Also, most any bass can "handle" low tunings just as long as you have higher gauge strings and a good set up.
